Janakpur

Janakpur is located at the base of the Himalayan Mountain Range and is surrounded by five major rivers. This particular city serves as the center of the Maithil culture, which has its own language and script. The Maithili women are known worldwide for their traditional paintings on pottery, walls and courtyards around the city.

Janakpur is also noteworthy for its historical ties to Hinduism. Two significant figures in Hinduism, Rama and Sita, are said to have lived their lives in this city and the Hindu epic story Ramayana takes place here. Therefore, Janakpur is an important pilgrimage sight for most Hindus.

The best time to visit Janakpur is from September to March to avoid the rainy seasons. The city center of Janakpur revolves around the Janaki Mandir. The Janaki Mandir is one of the largest temples in Nepal and is impressive even by modern standards. Visitors can expect to find plenty of colorful local merchants and Nepali craftsmen outside of the Janaki Mandir.
