A coastal state in India’s southwest, Karnataka boasts the highest number of protected historical monuments outside of Uttar Pradesh. The ruins found at the city of Hampi, the last capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the state’s most visited attractions.
The state is also home to 25 wildlife sanctuaries and five national parks that protect a range of animals. The Nagarhole National Park is the best known of Karnataka’s numerous nature preserves, and is one of the best places in India to spot and photograph of the Bengal Tigers, Indian Bison, and Asian Elephants. The state’s beautiful beaches and stunning waterfalls make it a nature lover’s paradise.
