Nurla village is located at an altitude of 2,800 metres with spectacular views of the Indus River and surrounding mountains. You will drive on the Srinagar-Leh highway on the way to nearby Lamayuru and visit the famous Lamayuru Monastery, founded in the 11th century, is perched on a spur high above the valley bottom just off the main road; it is one of the most spectacularly picturesque monasteries in central Ladakh and is believed to be the oldest in central Ladakh, and to have been the holy place of the Bon-chos at the advent of Buddhism. This monastery is also famous for the YURU Kabgyat Festival; the 2-day festival takes place in July in Lamayuru monastery. During the Festival, the monks perform masked dances, prayers and rituals to avert disasters and promote peace in the world.
